Dewey Blake Phelps Obituary (1928

Dewey "Blake" Phelps Jr., 87, of Fairfield died Thursday January 7, 2016 at University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City surrounded by family. Blake was born March 29, 1928 in the farmhouse of his parents, Dewey and Nina Conard Phelps. Childhood was shared with brother, Donald Edgar and sister, Carrel Jean. Older brother Donald Edgar died of leukemia at age 11. Blake graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1945, married Treva Ridgeway in August 1945 and four children were born to this union. Blake farmed with his father from 1945 through 1965. He later moved to Atlantic, Iowa, working for Farm Bureau Insurance as a Division Manager of 17 counties. He moved back to Fairfield in 1975 opening a commodity office with Heinhold Commodities out of Chicago, retiring in 2002. Blake later married Sherrill Nelson Parkinson in December 1976, she brought a daughter and a son from a previous marriage into the union. In March of 2008 Blake celebrated his 80th birthday with over 100 of his closest family and friends at the Best Western in Fairfield, a wonderful celebration was enjoyed by all who attended. In addition to his wife, Sherrill of Fairfield he is survived by three daughters, Jean Kooda of Richardson TX, Jodie Peters of Edmund, OK and Jackie Duetsh of Milton, a son Wayne Phelps (Janet) of Stockport, six grandchildren, Craig Kooda (Jill) of Plano, TX, Jon Phelps of Ankeny, Jeff Phelps (Kerri) of Stockport, Spencer Peters of Edmond, OK, Cody Deutsch of Kalamazoo, MI and Trevor Deutsh of Elkhart, IN, six great- grandchildren, Kyle and Carson Kooda of Plano, TX, Emma and Dean Phelps of Stockport and Jack and Cale Phelps of Ankeny, a sister, Carrel Jean (Rick) Vallery of Fort Pierre, SD. Surviving from Sherrill's family are a daughter, Lori Striegal (Eric) and a son Jeff Parkinson (Theresa) all of Swisher, four grandchildren, Samantha and Kevin Striegal both of Swisher and Carly and Cortney Parkinson both of Swisher. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Donald Phelps. In accordance with his wishes his body has been cremated. A memorial service will be at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday January 12, 2016 at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua with Rev. Joseph Phipps officiating. Visitation with family present will be from 10-11 A.M. Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Vale Cemetery, North of Bonaparte.
