Forest Ulin Obituary (1914

Forest F. " Frosty" Ulin age 93 of Fairfield died Tuesday, January 22,2008 at the Jefferson County Hospital. He was born on March 10, 1914 west of Hayesville in Keokuk County to John William and Lydia Ann Fischer Ulin. He graduated from Sigourney High School in 1931. After farming for several years, he attended Parsons College where he met his future wife Oma May Sands. They married on May 31, 1934. During World War II Frosty served with the Army for three years in the Pacific, assigned to the 533rd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment. His unit operated the landing craft used by the Army and Marine infantry to storm beaches. The boats repeatedly shuttled the infantrymen from the ships to the beaches until all of the troops were ashore. Army archives indicate that his unit participated in 60 assault landings on enemy-held territory during the first year that it was deployed. Mr. Ulin took an active role in the 533rd reunions. The family established their home in Fairfield in 1946 and spent the majority of his life as a photographer, owning and operating Ulin Photographic Studio. He also owned farmland in Keokuk County. Frosty was one of the founding fathers of Little League in Fairfield and coached teams both in Little League and in the Babe Ruth Leagues. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid quail hunter. He is survived by his wife of 73 years; one daughter Jane Connolly of Waverly, Iowa; one son Bill Ulin and wife Kitty of Manassas, Virginia, 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday at the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield with Pastor Dave Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Pennington Cemetery, south of Sigourney, following cremation. The family will receive friends on Friday afternoon from 3:00 until 5:00 P.M. at the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield. Memorials may be made to the Jefferson County Conservation Program.
